TriMix penile injections can be effective for patients with little to no success using traditional PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra®, Levitra®, or Cialis® on their own. By combining three proven ED medications into one compounded injectable, TriMix injections provide a safe, easy, and non-surgical option for men with ED to achieve and sustain longer, fuller erections firm enough for sex.
What is TriMix?
TriMix is a specially compounded injectable medication that takes the proven ED therapy of the vasodilator alprostadil, a chemically-identical form of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and potent vasodilator which enhances its performance with two other ED drugs, papaverine and phentolamine. These three drugs work synergistically to relax the muscles and widen the blood vessels in the penis—allowing for the blood flow necessary to achieve an erection—while also obstructing the alpha receptors responsible for constricting the arteries, preventing blood from leaving the penis and allowing you to sustain an erection for longer.
Before intimacy, TriMix is injected into the corpora cavernosa—the chambers of spongy muscle tissue on either side of the penis that fill with blood to create an erection—using a very fine needle. Once injected, the three medications begin to cause the smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation, and alpha receptor interruption necessary for a firm, long-lasting erection.
Recognized by the American Urological Society as an effective and viable treatment for ED, TriMix is an effective second line of therapy for patients who see limited success with oral PDE5 inhibitors, and delivers a host of benefits, including:

Getting Started with TriMix Injections
Your first TriMix injection will be done here at The Hormone Zone, under the supervision of one of our trained and experienced physicians, and will serve as a baseline “test dose” for your ideal treatment. You will be instructed on the proper technique and placement of your injection, which is very simple and easy to learn.
After the injection, you will wait in the comfort and privacy of the exam room for about 10 to 20 minutes, or until you achieve an erection.
The goal of the first TriMix injection is to achieve an erection firm enough for sexual penetration. That is about a 6 on a scale of 0 to 10, with zero being no reaction at all and 10 being the most favorable result possible. This is not necessarily an indication of your future results; the initial dose is kept low to prevent prolonged erections during dosage titration.
Depending on your in-office results, your Hormone Zone physician will then provide you with three different doses of TriMix injections of varying and incremental strengths to take home and experiment with. Over the next few days, you will inject one of your TriMix injections at a time—and never more than once in a 24-hour period, regardless of results—and observe your reaction. Once you think you have determined your optimal dosage strength, you will simply contact our office and let us know. We will then specially compound your medication and supply you with six at-home doses.

How many injections are in the TriMix Injection Package?
On your first visit, your TriMix Injection Package includes your first in-office “test dose,” and three additional “test doses.” For all future TriMix Injection Packages purchased, you will receive the entire supply of ten injections in your optimal dosage at once.
How long do erections triggered by TriMix last?
TriMix can work more quickly than many other methods of ED treatment, with erections occurring within 5 to 20 minutes of injection. Erections typically peak in function about 30 minutes after injection and can last between 1 and 2 hours. Erections lasting over 4 hours are considered a medical emergency requiring immediate care, which usually consists of administering phenylephrine to reverse the erection.
Am I a good candidate for TriMix injections?
Intracavernous injection medications like TriMix are an effective treatment option for men with ED who have had little to no success with PDE5 inhibitors. TriMix injections are often most appropriate for patients with medical conditions that prevent them from taking oral ED drugs, such as men with certain cardiovascular diseases, who have had prostate surgery, or who cannot take PDE5 inhibitors due to certain beta-blockers or concurrent nitrate therapy.
However, TriMix is not recommended for men with:
- Penile implants
- Penile abnormalities
- Leukemia
- Conditions that increase the risk for priapism (prolonged erections)
- Bleeding disorders
- Sickle cell anemia
- Known allergies to TriMix ingredients
- Explicit medical advice to refrain from sexual activity
Be sure to inform your Hormone Zone physician of all medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, and other substances you take. TriMix components can interact with some medications, causing adverse reactions or potentially making them less effective.
How often can I use TriMix?
TriMix is safe to use up to three times per week, with injections at least 24 hours apart.
